Boys Tennis: South Jersey CHAMPS!

Moorestown Friends defeated Sacred Heart 3-2 in the South Jersey Non-Public B finals today. Below is a recap of the matches in the order in which they finished:

Eric Maertin, playing #1 singles, was down 1-3 and then proceeded to win the next 11 games to win the match 6-3, 6-0 over Eric Ciancaglini.

Janak Bhatt, playing #3 singles, played very well in the second set but was defeated 6-2, 6-4 by Donovan Vassalotti.

Josh Myers and Shawn Gupta, at #1 doubles, lost the first set but defeated Matt Bik and Mike Torres 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Alex Timber, playing #2 singles, won this match 6-2, 7-6 (tiebreaker 7-4) and this won the team event.

Dave White and Jarret Berkowitz and their opponents Ed Novitskie and Mark Harper split set and the coaches decided to play a super tiebreaker (first to 10) to decide this match since the team match was already decided. The MFS duo lost 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (tiebreaker 13-11).

Coach of the champion Foxes is Mike Bodary. The team now advances to the state finals on Thursday, at 1 p.m., at Mercer County Park. GO FOXES!

GFS Downs Foxes in FSL Final

Host Germantown Friends jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning and MFS could not recover in a 5-3 loss Saturday in the Friends Schools League title game. Next up for MFS is Bishop Eustace in an NJSIAA Non-Public B quarterfinal. Date to be announced.

Foxes To Play GFS in Friends League Baseball Title Game

A Mike Stobbe sacrifice fly and Sean Cohen RBI single plated the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead the host Foxes to a 7-5 victory over Academy of the New Church (ANC) yesterday in a Friends Schools League (FSL) semifinal. ANC pitcher Curt Olson had tied the game at five in the top of the fifth inning with a three-run home run to right field. The winning pitcher for Moorestown Friends was Justin Spencer-Linzie who threw six innings. Ryan Solow pitched the seventh inning to earn the save.

The Foxes will travel to Germantown Friends School (click here for directions) on Saturday for the FSL championship game. First pitch is at 1 p.m.

Boys Lax Wins Playoff Tiebreak; Will Face ANC in Semifinal

Jake O'Donnell scored two goals, including the game winner with four minutes remaining, to lead the Foxes to a 6-5 victory over George School in a Friends Schools League (FSL) playoff tiebreak game played at Academy of the New Church (ANC). The team will return to ANC on Thursday, May 14 to face the Lions in an FSL semifinal matchup. Go Foxes!

Playoff Matchups Set

Today the boys lacrosse team travels to Academy of the New Church for a playoff tiebreaker vs. George School. The winner of the match will earn the fourth seed in the Friends Schools League (FSL) playoffs and travel to Shipley on Thursday for a semfinal match.

On Wednesday the baseball team will host Academy of the New Church in a FSL semifinal matchup at 4 p.m. The teams split the season series with each team winning on the road. The winner will face the winner of the Abington Friends vs. Germantown Friends semifinal on Saturday. Go Foxes!!!

Boys Lax Earns State Berth

The boys lacrosse team produced a dominating performance today, beating Paul VI 9-2 to earn a state playoff berth.The NJSIAA playoff brackets will be announced on Wednesday.

Two Teams Earn FSL Playoff Berth; Boys Lax To Play Tiebreak for Semifinal Berth

The MFS baseball team traveled to Shipley School on Saturday and earned a 8-4 victory. The visitors jumped on the Gators early leading 8-0, and never looked back. Ryan Solow earned the victory. The victory clinched a Friends School League (FSL) playoff berth and home field in the semifinal on Wed., May 13 (against an opponent to be determined).

On Friday, the boys tennis team downed Abington Friends 3-2 in a must-win match to clinch an FSL playoff berth. They will travel to Friends Central for a 4 p.m. FSL semifinal match on Tues., May 12. They also host Bishop Eustace on Thursday, May 14, in a NJSIAA South Jersey Non-Public B playoff match.

Finally, the boys lacrosse team traveled to Westtown School on Friday and captured a 14-6 win, creating a three-way tie for third place in the Friends League. They play George School on Tues., May 12 at Academy of the New Chruch in a FSL playoff tiebreaker. The winner earns the fourth seed in the playoffs.

Marc Narducci interviewed Baseball Coach Ron Obermeier about the Foxes 21-19 victory over Maple Shade on Saturday, April 4. The Foxes (3-1) were down 10-0 after the top of the first, but battled back to win in extra innings thanks to a Chris Elias, walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Katie Stutz Reaches 1,000-point Plateau
Senior Katie Stutz scored her 1,000th career point on February 12 in a 33-25 loss to Maple Shade. She is the fifth girls basketball player in school history to reach this milestone. The four others were: Sarah Feyerherm ’82, Kate Vecchio Hilgen ’85, Rachel Williams Speller ’91 and Jessica MacNeill ’95.

Fencers Move On to States
In fencing news, three individuals and the girls foil squad have advanced to state competition thanks to their performance at the NJSIAA District 2 meet on January 31. Sophomore Claire Ponticello captured the girls foil title, junior Alison Barton placed fourth in girls epee and senior Andrew Malik placed fifth in boys foil. The girls foil squad, which placed second, consists of freshman Sophia Aguilar, junior Dominique Gnatowski, sophomore Chandler Hart-McGonigle and Ponticello.

The NJSIAA squad state tournament is February 28, the individual state fencing tournament is Saturday, March 14.

Foxes Fare Well at FSL Swimming Champs
MFS was well represented at the recent Friends Schools League swimming championships. Highlighting the meet were gold medal finishes in the girls 100 breaststroke by freshman Sophia DePaulis and by the boys 400 freestyle relay team of senior Chris Lojek, and freshmen MacCabe Wilus, Doug Adair and Val Demuynck. Junior Justin Stark captured silver in the boys 50 freestyle. Earning individual bronze medals were: Demuynck (200 and 500 free), Wilus (100 free) and Adair (100 breaststroke). Three other relay teams also earned bronze medals: the girls 200 medley and 200 free relays and the boys 200 free relay.

Field Hockey Players Receive National Academic Honors
Five MFS senior field hockey players have been selected to the 2008 NFHCA High School National Academic Squad. They are: Kelly Barna, Sophia Demuynck, Maeve Kelly, Chelsea Norton and Rebecca Salowe.

Nominees must be a senior member of their high school varsity field hockey team and must have earned a cumulative, unweighted GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0 or the equivalent through the first marking period of the 2008-09 academic year to be selected.

Engel Qualifies for Meet of Champions

Congratulations to junior Bob Engel who placed 10th at the NJSIAA Non-Public B State Championship Meet on Sunday, November 16 to earn an automatic berth in the Meet of Champions on Saturday, November 22.

Bishop Eustace Downs Foxes in Non-Public B Boys Soccer Action

A game MFS boys soccer squad traveled to Pennsauken to take on Bishop Eustace on Thursday, November 6, but it wasn't to be their day. The host Pallotines capitalized on all three of their first half chances and cruised to a 4-0 victory. The Foxes pressed hard in the first half but couldn't score. Eustace goalie Tyler Millen made two spectacular saves to keep the Foxes off the board. Shots on the game were 10-5 in favor of the hosts. Millen and MFS goalie Justin Stark each had five saves. The Foxes end their season with a record of 10-7.

Field Hockey Team Advances to NJSIAA Central Jersey Semifinal

Senior Allie Friedman scored seven minutes into the first half and the host Foxes (#4 seed) didn't look back on their way to a 3-0 victory over Florence (#5 seed) in a NJSIAA Central Jersey Group I quarterfinal playoff match in Moorestown. Senior Gaby Lestino found the net off a Rebecca Salowe assist six minutes before half to double the Foxes lead.

Midway through the second half, senior Chelsea Norton put the game on ice by collecting her own rebound and driving the ball to the top corner to create the final margin of victory.

Next up for the Foxes is top-seeded New Egypt. MFS travels to New Egypt on Friday, November, 7. Game time is 2 p.m. To view the entire Central Jersey Group I bracket, click here.
