STUDENTS TEACH STUDENTS AT SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING EXPO - APRIL 21
Students at Moorestown Friends School (MFS) will participate in the school’s 11th annual Science and Engineering Exposition (SEE) on Tuesday, April 21. During this all-school event, Middle and Upper School students will display science projects and posters, engage in competitions, and play games. The Lower School students will be the “audience” for their Upper School “science teachers.” The Upper School demonstrate scientific principles to their younger colleagues. “We believe this model serves the overall function of SEE, which is designed to strengthen science communication skills, a critical element of the scientific method,” said MFS Science Department Chair Dr. Barbara Kreider. “As any teacher will tell you, you really learn material when you teach it. Our Upper School students work hard to teach the Lower School students.” Lower and Middle School students will see a presentation by the Philadelphia Zoo on Wheels, while Upper School students will attend an assembly on “Designing Smart Environments for Smart Environmentalists” given by Sean Duffy, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Psychology at Rutgers University-Camden. In addition, a group of seniors will present their senior capstone projects at SEE. Electronic capstone projects will include Rebecca Salowe’s iTunes podcast on nutrition entitled Science Among Friends, Orysia Bezpalko’s blog on health and physiology entitled Physiologic and Kelly Barna’s blog called "Kelly Green." Other events are senior Russell Hensley’s robotics competition and senior Sarah Connell’s diffusion estimation event. Senior Christina Cabrera has organized an Elementary School Health Fair and senior Ryan Solow will present the physiology of baseball pitching. Junior Samantha Blatt has a video presentation about her summer study of coral reefs. The national award-winning MFS Robotics Team will also be on hand to demonstrate their electronic creations.
