AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR D.B. JOHNSON HIGHLIGHTS ONE BOOK DAY - MONDAY, MAY 18
Students at Moorestown Friends School (MFS) will participate in the school’s first One Book Day on Monday, May 18. Students from preschool – grade 11, faculty and staff will share D.B. Johnson’s Henry Hikes to Fitchburg, a picture book inspired by a passage from Henry David Thoreau’s Walden. Activities relating to the book will take place throughout the day. The author and illustrator, D.B. Johnson, will visit with students in a variety of settings. Student in grades 2 -11 will experience an interdivisional day, during which each student will be assigned a “buddy” from a different division. They will eat a bag lunch and then travel through a series of events together. These activities will include an assembly with the author, a multi-age discussion group facilitated by faculty members and the ‘Fitchburg Fair,” which will provide a variety of activities for students organized by parent volunteers, faculty and staff. Activities will include crafts, a New Jersey honey tasting, environmental fun and games, a model display of Thoreau’s house at Walden Pond and more. “Reading and discussing a common text will help the students learn to listen to and appreciate the thoughts of others,” said MFS Head Librarian Martha Reilly. “The activities we have planned will generate an afternoon of thought and discussion that will help each student gain a better understanding of his or her values.” Schedule for MFS One Book Day:
