KAREN WASHINGTON APPOINTED DIRECTOR OF MULTICULTURAL AFFAIRS

Karen Washington of Willingboro has been appointed Director of Multicultural Affairs at Moorestown Friends School (MFS).  She has taught at MFS since 1994 and was chair of the World Languages Department from 1999 to 2007. Since 2003, she has served as the school’s Diversity Coordinator in a part-time role.

“I am very excited to be moving into a full-time position that will help to maintain and expand upon our efforts to create a diverse learning community,” said Washington.

“As Diversity Coordinator, Karen has done a wonderful job developing programs for our students and faculty that foster inclusiveness, tolerance and respect for all people,” said Associate Head of School and Academic Dean Barbara Caldwell. “We are very pleased to be able to expand Karen’s role with the school to focus on these programs and curricula in a full-time capacity.”

Washington in a recent article described the importance of diversity for the MFS community:

“In our world today, diversity is a component in many educational, professional and social settings. Although commonly and singularly viewed in terms of race, social identifiers can be more accurately categorized to include race, ethnicity, age, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender, ability, and religion. In a school such as ours which includes a mission to espouse Quaker values, it is our responsibility not only to respect all members of our community, but to also nurture and support the many identities that shape us – creating a healthy and safe environment for all members.”

Washington has been an educator for over 25 years, teaching Latin, Spanish, English, and English as a Second Language at the middle school, upper school, and community college levels. She has participated in various conferences, including the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) People of Color Conference and the NAIS Summer Diversity Institute. She has also been actively involved with New Jersey SEEDS (Scholars Educators Excellence Dedication Success), an organization which prepares academically talented, financially limited youth for success at competitive high schools. She also has facilitated MFS faculty development through the National S.E.E.D. Project (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity). Washington received her M.A. in Bilingual/Bicultural Studies from LaSalle University in 1990, and her B.A. in Foreign Language Education from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1979.
