MFS News June 3, 2008 MFS COMMUNITY MOURNS LOSS OF BELOVED COACH ALVIN "AL" SHERBY
The Moorestown Friends School community is mourning the loss of beloved coach Alvin “Al” Sherby, who passed away suddenly on Monday, June 2. Mr. Sherby was a member of the school’s coaching staff for 15 years, serving as the assistant boys’ varsity baseball coach and as a Middle School boys’ basketball coach from 1994-2008. His jovial presence at baseball games in the MFS first base coach’s box was familiar to opposing players and coaches, as well as umpires throughout South Jersey and the Friends Schools League. “Al loved kids and they loved him,” said MFS Head of School Larry Van Meter. “He was a treasured member of the MFS family and the entire school community holds Al’s family in our thoughts and prayers.” Athletic Director Danielle Dayton also spoke of Mr. Sherby’s influence on MFS students: “Al didn’t just teach sports, he taught life,” she said. “Our student-athletes are so appreciative of the life lessons he took the time to teach them.” “He’s the kind of coach that cared more about the kids’ lives than about winning and losing,” said MFS varsity baseball coach Ron Obermeier. “He’s someone the kids looked up to as a role model and a mentor. He always had a smile on his face.” Mr. Sherby earned a B.S. in physical education from the College of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas. A Mount Laurel resident, he taught in the Camden schools from 1966 – 2002 and served as a co-chair of the city’s Drug Education program. He was a director in the city’s Recreational Program from 1968-1974. Well known for his passion for sports, Mr. Sherby held a number of coaching jobs over the years in addition to his MFS experience. He was an assistant varsity football coach at Camden High from 1966-1974. He also served a one-year stint as boys varsity soccer coach at Camden in 1979. Mr. Sherby also volunteered for the Maccabi Games (track and field) from 1994-2002 and the Greentree baseball program in Mount Laurel from 1983-1992. Mr. Sherby is survived by his wife Marilyn, son Craig, and daughter Alyson. Memorial donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, South Jersey Chapter, 1415 Rt. 70 East, Suite 502, Cherry Hill, NJ, 08034. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 4, at 10:15 a.m. at the Platt Memorial Chapel, 2001 Haddonfield-Berlin Road, Cherry Hill, NJ 08003. Obituary from Philadelphia Inquirer, June 4, 2008
