We give to MFS because... Paul ’56 and Nell Mecray – Bryn Mawr, PA
“I have felt a sense of gratitude to MFS throughout my career as an energy securities analyst at Wellington Management Company. It wasn’t until I began spending increasing amounts of time in the Middle East, however, that I realized just how much I appreciated the sense of values, fairness and respect for other cultures – all of which came from my six years at Moorestown Friends. The more deeply I became involved in Arab-Israeli politics and Sunni-Shiite differences in both Iraq and Iran, I leaned on the Quaker traditions of acceptance and seeking a middle ground between seemingly intractable foes. To be even more specific, it was Cully Miller who 'turned me on' to politics and debate, sparks that have ignited a life-long passion for international affairs. “It wasn’t until our 50th reunions at MFS (and Nell’s at Springside School), helping to raise funds for class gifts, that all of these feelings surfaced. My wife and I had traditionally made more generous gifts to our church and colleges but then both began to realize that maybe we owed an even greater sense of appreciation to our secondary schools. Certainly we could see they needed a lot more financial help than Princeton and Wellesley. As a result, these two schools have become a higher priority at a time when our children are now all educated, married and fully self-sufficient. It now is a time for us to give back to institutions that shaped our lives in appreciation for our parents’ generosity and foresight in sending us there.” – Paul Mecray ’56
